Roof Truss Wall Plate

Walls that are constructed of concrete block that need to be covered with a roof will require the use of a ledger.

Measure and mark the top plate of the walls on either side of your structure running in line with the proposed roof s ridge every 24 inches. Step 2 stand the first truss on the end of the wall flush with the outside end of the wall. Start from the same end on both walls so that the sets of marks are parallel. Fixing roof trusses to a wall plate requires a small amount of carpentry knowledge such as the abilities to read a tape measure and operate a framing square.

Be careful not to split the end of the truss and it would be a good idea to pre drill the end first before nailing. A ledger is a horizontal board that is attached to the top of the the wall. This takes a little extra time but well worth the effort. However anchor bolt spacing must be reduced 24 in.

As an alternate to the roof truss anchor a bolted top plate may be used for the roof to wall connection see figure 5. Workers manually move the first truss to the end of the roof and stand it up positioning it on the corresponding number on the wall plate. Take note where the other end of the rafter plate is in relation to the nearest. Once in place the workers nail the truss to the wall. Otherwise setting roof trusses onto wall plates can be done by the average do it yourselfer usually in one to two days depending on the size and scope of the project. Toenail a truss into the top of the wall plate by nailing through the sides of the bottom chord at a 30 degree angle. Will all be fixed to them. Roof trusses attach to a ledger that is on top of a block wall.
